This annual biker charity event has become a classic!
Launched in 1982 (simultaneously in Cape Town and Johannesburg) by the Italian Motorcycle Owners Club (IMOC), the Toy Run is the largest motorcycling-related charity event in Southern Africa.
Every November the event is held in over 20 centres around South Africa, the largest being the Gauteng Toy Run (Johannesburg). The Gauteng Toy Run collects in the region of 22 000 toys on the day and these are redistributed to service clubs and requesting charities that evening. This enables many of the less fortunate children to receive their gifts in time for Christmas. In Johannesburg there are 5 mass rides culminating at the Benoni Northerns Sports grounds in Northmead, Benoni on Sunday the 27th November.
The Toy Run is an institution amongst the biking fraternity. It is synonymous with a great day out and comprises of entertainment, stalls including food stands and events. The only entrance fee charged is a toy for the less fortunate and it need not be new. The children benefiting from the event range in age from 6 months to 18 years and we would like ask our Toy Run patrons to focus on educational and toiletry packs as gifts.
We would like to remind participants that the Johannesburg Metro Police Department could be checking bikes for roadworthiness and that the organisers fully support the wearing of full protective gear.
